Back to the grind of “real life”… and more numbers

I’ve been home for less than a week and already the stress of “real life” has returned. To combat this, I did what any good adventure motorcyclist would do – I started browsing through pictures of the summer trip. What caught my eye first was what I ran across back on June 30.

I had camped just outside of Missoula, MT and was tooling along the Blackfoot River on Rte. 200 a few miles east of town. 200 runs east-west between the river and a mountain.

There had been signs warning me that this was bighorn sheep territory, and sure enough, as I rounded a corner I came across 7 of them making their way across the road from the river to the mountains.

They all hopped quickly down into a ravine as I approached. I pulled over about 75 yards beyond, and only this guy popped up out of the ravine. I assume he is the alpha of the group and was keeping an eye on me. I don’t think his eyes strayed from me for more than a couple seconds at a time in the 10 minutes I sat there snapping pictures.

To give it some scale, this is a pic without zooming in at all. He was close!

About an hour later, I stopped for a smoke and spotted a nest in a tree off in the distance. This is zoomed in as far as I could go. I even broke out the Gorilla Pod to help keep the camera steady.

I don’t know what kind of bird that is, but I’m assuming it’s a hawk or falcon of some sort. Anyone know?

Before I head back to my real-world stress, I thought I’d throw five more numbers at you from the trip:

Number of countries visited: 2
Number of states visited: 35
Highest temperature ridden in: 118 in Death Valley, CA
Lowest temperature ridden in: 34 in Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA
Average MPG for the entire trip: 49
